Yuri Hanin

 A Senior Researcher, Professor Yuri L. Hanin has been working in KIHU-Research Institute for Olympic Sports (Jyväskylä) since 1991. Born in St-Petersburg, he holds PhD (1970) and D.Sc. (1986) scientific degrees in Social Psychology from St.-Petersburg University, Russia.

For 35 years Dr. Hanin’s research, teaching, and consultancy have focused on communication in top sports teams, competitive stress, anxiety, and performance emotions. He is internationally recognized as one of the leading authorities in the area of performance-related emotions. Emotion in Sports (Human Kinetics, 2000) book provides a description of his Individual Zones of Optimal Functioning (IZOF) model and emotion profiling. He has numerous publications including four books, numerous book chapters, and journal articles related to optimising athletic performance. Dr. Hanin has been an invited speaker at over 90 international Congresses throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, and Australia. He is currently an editorial board member of several professional journals and a sport psychology section editor for a 3-volume Encyclopaedia of Applied Psychology.

In Russia (1967 – 88) and Finland (1991-2005), Dr. Hanin has been a consultant with national, international, and Olympic level athletes and coaches in several sports including ice-hockey (U-18 gold medals in WC-99 and WC – 2000; Finnish National ice-hockey team –silver in WC-2004), soccer, volleyball, track and field, swimming, skiing, gymnastics, orienteering, and golf.

Dr. Hanin is a recipient of several distinguished scholar rewards including the Distinguished International Scholar Award (1999) from the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP) and the Visiting Scholar Award (1998) from the Australian College of Sport Psychologists, Scientific Award (1996) from the Austrian Olympic Committee, and the 2nd level Award from the European Athletic Association in Science Award Competition (2004). Professor Hanin is a president-elect (2002-2006) of the Division 12 (Sport Psychology) of the International Association of Applied Psychology.
